Harry's HatThe Harry Award

JOHN DENNIS “HARRY” HARRISON OAM 1937 – 1994

It is impossible to measure the contribution of John “Harry” Harrison to the Broadview Football Club by statistics alone. In a 35 year association with our club commencing in 1959, Harry compiled an unparalleled list of achievements:

  • 96 Game Player

  • 27 Consecutive Years as Under 9 Coach Coach of Multiple Association Teams

  • Awarded Life Membership of BFC in 1974

  • Awarded Order of Australia Medal in 1986

Whilst this list of achievements is certainly something to be proud of, Harry would tell you that his greatest achievement was to bring a smile to the face of each one of over 1,000 children that he coached. Harry was only a little fella, & sometimes the only way to tell him apart from his players was by his beard & ever present hat, which is now proudly displayed in our clubrooms. Harry never sought recognition, his sole motivation was to see children developing & enjoying their football. He was there to teach them, encourage them, wipe away the tears & offer a consoling hug when needed.

Harry took great pride in following the careers of his players with Broadview, & many who went on to higher honours in the SANFL & AFL. The walls of our club are littered with Premiership, State, & All Australian players who commenced their career with Harry. To Harry, they would always remain his boys. One of Harry’s proudest moments was to receive the Order of Australia Medal in 1986 for his contribution to junior football.

There is a photo on display in our clubrooms of Harry receiving this award from Queen Elizabeth II aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia.

The Broadview Football Club recognizes & remembers John Harrison with an annual award to the Under 9 player who best represents the outstanding qualities of Harry.

  • Selfless Dedication To The Team

  • Positive Approach To Their Football

  • Enthusiasm & Enjoyment

We encourage all players recognised with the Harry Award to continue with these traits, which will be of great benefit to their football, & their life.

There will never be another John “Harry” Harrison.
